ZOHUD

Bio

ZOHUD’s music ranges between rock, urban, R&B, techno, among other genres.

Teaching himself to play the guitar, keyboard, and drums, he formed the first rock band in the Gaza Strip in 2012 under the name Khata’ Matbaai (Typo), influenced by the experiences of Arab rock bands at the time. He sought out instrument players and people with a passion for music, some of whom he taught himself. The experiment succeeded, and the band released its first album, Awal Khata’ (First Mistake). Zohud released  his first single, “Ahlam Bennoor” (I Dream in Light), during the 2014 Israeli assault on Gaza.

In 2020, Zohud put together a small personal studio in his home, where he produced several songs, including “Seeboony Anam” (Let Me Sleep), during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Most recently, he produced “Qalbi Ely Rayeh” (My Departing Heart) and “Farq Kbir” (Big Difference).

Zohud does not focus on one particular musical genre and values the concepts behind his work, which he believes can lead him to new musical forms.

Released track Bashbah Emmbareh

The reality of the Israeli siege on the Gaza Strip is manifested in this song, with ZOHUD recounting how so many of his plans and dreams have collapsed, as the occupation authorities deny him a permit to leave the Strip and have new musical experiences or the chance to find new opportunities and audiences.

Zohud frames his experience as though it were stuck in a place akin to yesterday, using the song to recall the resulting anger and his recollections, in what can be described as an effort to challenge disappointment and break the stagnation of a given phase, and of time itself.
